Overview
A copyright is essentially a right not to copy someone’s work. A copyright gives the owner of the subject an exclusive right over his work. If a work is protected by copyright, no one can imitate copy or reproduce the original work in any other way. The Copyright Act, 1957 came into effect from January 1958 in India. Section 9 of the Copyright Act requires for establishment of an office to be called the Copyright Office for the purpose of the Act. The Copyright Office is to be under the immediate control of a Registrar of Copyrights to be appointed by the Central Government. Copyright registration is the legal process through which creators protect their original works, such as literature, music, and art, by securing exclusive rights to their use and distribution. This registration grants the creator important rights, including reproduction, distribution, public performance, and the creation of derivative works.

Benefits
Establishing a public record of the copyright claim:
Registration creates a legal record that establishes the creator or owner’s claim to the copyright. This can be used as evidence in a court of law if the copyright is ever challenged or infringed upon.
Legal protection:
By registering the copyright, the owner can take legal action to stop an infringement or seek damages. Without registration, an owner may not be able to take legal action.
International protection:
Copyright registration can also provide international protection for the work if the country in which the registration was made is a member of an international copyright treaty or agreement.
Licensing and Monetization:
Registered copyright works can be licensed or monetized by the owner.
Eligibility for statutory damages and attorney’s fees:
If a work is registered, the copyright owner may be eligible for statutory damages, which can be as much as Rs. 1,170,000 per work, as well as attorney’s fees, which can be awarded to the copyright owner in an infringement action.
