Complete Guide for Food Licence FSSAI Registration

FSSAI registration is mandatory for every Food Business Operator (FBO), including manufacturing units as well as individuals involved in packaging and distribution are also bound to attain FSSAI registration to operate their food related businesses. The FBO must be a registered entity with separate PAN and GST Registrations along with other necessary local / municipal registrations, such as registration of shops and establishment.

FSSAI Food License bears a 14-digit number, which is location specific and is also term bound. It carries a registration number. The approval certificate is granted by the FSSAI which is operated under Ministry of Family Health and Welfare.

Types of FSSAI Licence in India:

1. FSSAI Registration – Basic

It is the primary kind of registration issued for businesses that are small in turnover – up to ₹12 lakhs approximately per annum. Catering businesses irrespective of their turnover have to apply for a state licence and not a basic FSSAI registration.

2. FSSAI State Licence

Companies that have a profit greater than ₹12 lakhs require a state licence.

3. FSSAI Central Licence

The central registration is for bigger businesses that have a turnover of over ₹20 crores per annum. Companies that supply food to government offices/departments and businesses involved in food import/export, an online platform, operating franchises, or chains of hotels/restaurants have to get a central licence as well.

Penalties

FSSAI Registration is necessary for all small-scale food businesses. Any Food Business Operator who does not have an annual turnover of less than Rs.20 lakh.

In case a person or a food business operator himself who is supposed to obtain the License manufactures, sells, stores or distributes, or imports any article for food without a license then it is a punishable offense with imprisonment for six months and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.

Penalties for False advertisement

Any person who publishes or is a party to the publication of an advertisement that:

1. Falsely describes the food or

2. Is likely to mislead as to the nature or substance or quality of any food or false guarantee then shall be liable to a penalty which can be extended to ten lakh rupees

Documents Required for FSSAI License

All documents will be self-attested before applying the FSSAI License, those basic documents are required are as follows:

Passport-sized photographs.

Identity proof of Applicant (Food Business Operator)

Proof of property ownership.

Business Address Proof Utility Bill.

Rent Agreement.

Application FORM-A or FORM-B
